Payments & Settlement Layer 1s.
Established Layer 1s competing primarily on payments, remittance and settlement throughput.
This narrative covers the Layer 1 chains that compete primarily on moving value โ payments, remittance and settlement โ rather than on hosting complex applications. Their pitch is narrow and operational: low fees, fast finality, predictable throughput and the banking or payment-provider relationships needed to reach an end user who never touches a wallet.
Stablecoins reset the terms of this competition. Settlement demand now overwhelmingly means moving dollar-denominated tokens, so the chains that win are the ones where stablecoins are cheapest and most liquid to transfer, with the corridors and off-ramps to convert at the edges. That favours incumbents with distribution over technically superior newcomers.
Useful signals: stablecoin supply resident on the chain, transfer volume and fee revenue net of wash activity, and the number of institutional integrations that would be costly to unwind. Regulatory posture matters more here than in any other narrative, because these networks touch regulated money movement directly.
